Car batteries come in dozens of sizes, and using the wrong one can damage your car's electrical system or void your warranty. Here's how to read battery size codes and find the right one for your car.
The Two Battery Standards in Malaysia
Malaysian cars use two main battery standards: JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung).
JIS batteries are used in most Japanese and Korean cars — Perodua, Proton Saga/Iriz/Persona, Toyota, Honda, Nissan. DIN batteries are used in European cars and some newer models like the Proton X50 and X70.
How to Read JIS Battery Codes
A JIS code like NS60L breaks down as:
- N — Narrow case (S = special, wider)
- S — Short height
- 60 — Approximate capacity in Ah (ampere-hours)
- L — Left-side positive terminal (no letter = right side)
How to Read DIN Battery Codes
A DIN code like DIN66 means the battery has approximately 66Ah capacity. The physical size and terminal layout are standardised within each DIN group (DIN55, DIN66, DIN74, DIN88, DIN100).
