You turn the key. Nothing. Or maybe a sad clicking sound. Your car battery is dead — and it always seems to happen at the worst possible time.
Here's what to do, step by step.
Step 1: Confirm It's the Battery
A dead battery typically shows these signs:
- Engine won't crank, or cranks very slowly
- Clicking sound when you turn the key
- Lights, radio, and AC work but car won't start
- Battery warning light on dashboard
If your lights are completely dead too, it's almost certainly the battery.
Step 2: Try a Jumpstart First
If someone with a working car is nearby, a jumpstart can get you moving temporarily. You'll need jumper cables and a helper vehicle. Connect the cables in this order:
- Red cable to dead battery's positive (+) terminal
- Red cable to good battery's positive (+) terminal
- Black cable to good battery's negative (−) terminal
- Black cable to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car (not the battery)
Start the working car, wait 2 minutes, then try starting yours. If it starts, drive for at least 30 minutes to let the alternator recharge the battery.
Step 3: Know When to Replace, Not Jumpstart
A jumpstart is a temporary fix. If your battery is more than 3 years old, or if it goes flat repeatedly, it needs replacing — not another jumpstart.
Signs you need a new battery immediately:
- Battery is 4+ years old
- It's gone flat more than once in a month
- Jumpstart works but car dies again within hours
- Battery casing is swollen or leaking
