Aeson Sodium-Ion Battery Malaysia: Is It Worth the Upgrade?

Aeson Power has launched a new sodium-ion car battery in Malaysia — lighter, faster to charge, and built for our heat. Here's what you need to know before switching.

Something new arrived on the Malaysian car battery scene in late 2025: Aeson Power's sodium-ion automotive battery. It's not lead-acid. It's not lithium-ion. It's a third chemistry entirely — and the specs make for interesting reading if you've been stuck replacing your car battery every two or three years.

We stock and install Aeson batteries at Carput, so here's our honest take on whether it's worth the premium over conventional options.

What Is a Sodium-Ion Battery?

Sodium-ion (Na+) batteries work similarly to lithium-ion batteries, but use sodium instead of lithium as the charge-carrying ion. Sodium is more abundant and cheaper to source than lithium, which is part of why Aeson can offer a next-generation battery without a next-generation price tag.

Aeson's automotive range — the NaPulse Starting, NaPulse Start-Stop, and NaForce Start-Stop — uses polyanion cathode technology. This is the same family of chemistry used in some of the most thermally stable battery cells in industrial applications.

The Key Numbers

  • Cycle life: 3,000 cycles at 50% depth of discharge — versus 500–1,200 cycles for lead-acid
  • Charge time: 0–100% in approximately 40 minutes
  • Operating temperature: Continuous use up to 80°C (critical for our engine bays)
  • Starting voltage: Can start your car at 10.5V — lead-acid typically fails below 12V
  • Weight: Up to 73% lighter than an equivalent lead-acid battery
  • Warranty: 3 years as standard — most lead-acid batteries come with 12–18 months

Why Malaysian Drivers Should Pay Attention

Malaysia's climate is genuinely punishing for car batteries. Engine bay temperatures regularly exceed 60°C, and if you're sitting in KL traffic, the heat has nowhere to go. Conventional lead-acid batteries lose at least 15% of their cycle life for every 10°C rise in temperature — which means a battery rated for 1,000 cycles in a temperate climate might only give you 400–500 in ours.

Aeson's sodium-ion cells don't suffer the same thermal degradation. In their own testing, capacity retention stays above 85% after a month of storage at 60°C. In practice, this means less chance of waking up to a flat battery after parking in the sun.

What Cars Is It Compatible With?

Aeson says their batteries are compatible with over 95% of vehicles on the market and can directly replace conventional MF, EFB, and AGM batteries without any modification. This covers Perodua, Proton, Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and most European models.

The exception is pure EVs — these batteries are designed for internal combustion engine vehicles only.

Price and Value

Aeson NaPulse Starting models begin at RM369, with the Start-Stop series ranging up to RM1,359 depending on size. That's higher than a standard Amaron or Camel Plus, but lower than a Varta AGM for the same size range. Given the 3-year warranty and significantly longer cycle life, the total cost of ownership over five years often works out cheaper.

Our Verdict

If you drive a modern start-stop vehicle, park outdoors in Malaysian heat, or have replaced your battery more than once in the last three years — the Aeson sodium-ion is genuinely worth considering. It's not just marketing; the chemistry backs up the claims.
